Shooting percentage plus save percentage. It regresses hard toward 100, which is the entire point of looking at it.
Formula
PDO = team shooting % + team save %PDO has no units and no meaning on its own. Its value is that it sits near 100 for almost everyone over a season, so a team far above or below it has been getting results its process does not support in either direction.
A team at 103 in November is usually not that good. A team at 97 is usually not that bad. It is the cheapest regression signal in hockey.
The common mistake
Calling it luck and stopping there. Persistent high PDO can be real — an elite goalie is a durable save-percentage edge — so check whether the goalie's GSAX supports it before writing it off.
