Point percentage
also: P% · points percentage
Points won as a share of points available. The only fair way to compare teams that have played a different number of games.
P% = points / (2 x games played)Every game puts two points on the table, so a team's ceiling is twice its games played. Dividing by that gives a figure between 0 and 1 that means the same thing in October and April, which raw point totals do not while teams are games apart on the schedule.
Roughly .600 makes the playoffs and .500 does not, because the loser point inflates everyone: an overtime loss still pays one point, so the league average sits above .500 rather than at it.
It is returned on every standings row for exactly the mid-season case, where a team with two games in hand looks worse on points and better on percentage, and the percentage is the one that predicts.
Treating .500 as the break-even mark. With the loser point the league average is closer to .560, so a team at .500 is below average, not average.
