Corsi%

also: CF% · shot attempt percentage · shot share

A team's share of all shot attempts while it is on the ice — the oldest and bluntest measure of who is controlling play.

Formula
CF% = shot attempts for / (shot attempts for + shot attempts against)

A shot attempt is any puck sent at the net: a goal, a shot on goal, a missed shot or a blocked shot. Corsi counts all four. The idea is that a team cannot attempt shots without the puck, so over a season the share of attempts is a usable proxy for the share of possession — which is far harder to measure directly and was not recorded at all when the metric was invented.

It is computed at 5-on-5 by convention. Including power plays would flatter whichever team drew more penalties, which is a different skill and already shows up in the goal totals.

League average is exactly 50% by construction: every attempt is one team's Corsi for and another's Corsi against. A good possession team lives around 52-54%. Anything past 57% over a full season is exceptional — Carolina has led the league in four of the last five.

The common mistake

Corsi says nothing about shot quality. A team firing point shots into shin pads can out-attempt a team generating slot chances and lose comfortably. Read it beside expected goals, never instead of them.
