Shots stopped as a share of shots faced. The oldest goalie stat, and the one most distorted by the team in front.
Formula
SV% = (shots against − goals against) / shots againstStill the number everyone quotes, and still useful as a summary — it just carries the team's defensive structure inside it. Two goalies with identical save percentages can be a full win apart in value once shot quality is accounted for.
It stabilises slowly. Roughly 500 shots, or about fifteen starts, before a goalie's save percentage says much about the goalie rather than the sample.
The common mistake
Ranking goalies by it across teams. Use GSAX for that; save percentage is a description of what happened, not a measure of who is good.
